Concrete has been around for thousands of years, and has been used to build many amazing structures throughout the world, such as the Pantheon in Rome. Concrete is the most used material in the world, and it is used to construct everything from skyscrapers to building foundations. A unique mixture of the two materials is what makes concrete so well-suited for construction. Aggregates are graded based on rock fragment size. Fine aggregate is very small, and coarse aggregate is comprised of much larger chunks of rock. All aggregates used to make concrete have to be strong and free of chemicals. Aggregate often contains fine materials, such as clay, that can deteriorate concrete over time and therefore it has to be cleaned before mixing. Aggregates typically make up about 70 percent of the total volume of concrete, and they are crucial to strengthening concrete. The rest of the volume is made up of cement, which acts like a paste that effectively binds the aggregates together to form a solid and sturdy concrete slab.
