The World’s Largest Granite Quarry
Mount Airy is a small North Carolina town that boasts the largest granite quarry in the world, which is affectionately known to locals as “The Rock.” People have been mining the quarry for 120 years, and it has produced granite that has been used to build memorials such as the WWII memorial in Washington D.C.
The Rock’s surface area is approximately the size of 66 football fields, and the quarry can be seen from space. However, the granite rock itself is much, much larger than that. It is about seven miles long and one mile wide, and is estimated to be about 8,000 feet deep. Miners have reached a maximum depth of 60 feet, so they have a long way to go. According to geologists, the quarry has enough granite to last at least another 500 years.
To extract the granite, the miners use extremely powerful pressurized water cannons that blast ridges in the rock. The next step is to use a diamond wire device, which the workers slide into the ridges of the granite created by the water cannon to saw off large chunks. Then the miners use precise explosives to blow off uniform chunks of granite, which they can then transport to fabricating facilities using powerful, heavy-duty forklifts.
This is one of, if not the most, impressive quarries in the world. The granite extracted there has been used in countless buildings and monuments throughout the U.S. and the world.
